Oregon Coast Storm Watching

Storm Watching on The Oregon Coast

The rugged coastline and the raw power of the pacific make the Oregon Coast a prime destination for storm watching in the winter months. With higher tides and bigger ocean swells, October through January usually provide the best time to storm watch. The best storm watching is when the ocean swells exceed 10 feet.

The key to great storm watching is to find a place that sits above the action. Steep rocky cliffs provide dramatic wave crashing views. Just be sure to watch from a safe distance. Big surges can come quickly and wash over rocks and jetties.

A few of our favorite storm watching areas:

On the Northern Oregon Coast:

Fort Stevens

Cape Lookout

Cape Kiwanda

On the Central Oregon Coast:

Boiler Bay

Depoe Bay sea wall

Devil’s Punchbowl

On the Southern Oregon Coast:

Heceta Head

Cape Perpetua

Samuel H Boardman

Be Safe!

Because the ocean is at its’ mightiest during these storms, it is important to remember to use caution. Respect fences, walls and barriers. The ocean waves during these storms can come crashing in at a force of 25mph. Surges are common and going beyond the marked safety barriers has proven to be deadly. Stay back and watch from a safe distance! Avoid going out on rocky cliffs and jetties. No photo is worth your life!

There are many local shops and businesses to support along the way. Enjoy the power of the pacific and stay safe while doing it.
