Cape Lookout Cape Trail
The hike up Cape Lookout Trail is breathtaking. As you wind around a 5 mile round trip trail
through old growth spruce trees, you will come upon the sight of a B-17 bomber that crashed in
1943. The Cape was covered in heavy dense fog, and the pilot crashed into the 900′ cape. There
was one survivor. Although you can’t actually see the wreckage that is reportedly there in the
dense underbrush, there is a plaque to commemorate the sight. You will then continue on the trail
that takes you past cliffs exposing the beautiful pacific ocean. As you come to the end of the turn
around, which is the end of the trail, you will have an awesome view of the ocean. On a clear day
you can see all the way to Haystack Rock in Pacific City and beyond. It is also a wonderful place
to spot gray whales during their migration. Because they have to maneuver around the 2 mile
peninsula that you will be directly on top of, the whales are easy to spot. Although the trail is well
used and often muddy, you don’t want to miss this beautiful hike along the Oregon Coastline.
Cape Lookout Beach Trail
Unlike the end of the cape hiking trail, the south trail (beach trail) will lead you to a beach access. It is
approximately a 4.2 mile round trip hike depending on how far you hike up or down the beach. The trail is
well maintained, although slippery and muddy when the weather has been wet. It is a fairly steep decline
(approx 900′ elevation) on the way in, which leads to a steep incline on the way out. There are many
switchbacks on this trail and we highly recommend that you stay on the main trail. As you wind around
the trail, you are bound to see an abundance of wild life. There are several breathtaking viewpoints along
the way leading to a secluded beach and the Cape Lookout headland. Once down on the beach you will
see where the mighty Pacific meets the dense old growth forests. It is truly one of the Oregon Coast’s
many treasures. You are sure to remember this beautiful place forever and will likely visit again.

Cape lookout Trailhead 18.7 miles southwest of Tillamook on the south-side of Cape lookout.
Difficulty Moderate.
Tips
- Bring water and something to eat!
- There are some steep cliffs, so use caution and stay on designated trails, and keep your children
with you at all times. - Don’t try to fit this hike into a tight schedule. You’ll want to have at least 3-4 hours so you won’t have to rush. Especially if you do the beach trail!
