Killer Whales Spotted In Depoe Bay On The Central Oregon Coast

The killer whales were heading north toward Cape Foul Weather and we followed them for quite awhile. We went back the next morning and they were still roaming around Gull Rock directly off of Cape Foul Weather.

Spotting killer whales on the Oregon coast is rare so we were really excited to see this pod!

Wildlife Viewing Oregon Coast Harbor Seals

A friendly group of harbor seals enjoying their morning on the central Oregon coast. A few great places to frequently spot them are Nehalem Bay, Siletz Bay River Mouth, Alsea Bay River Mouth, and the south Jetty of the Rogue River Mouth in Gold Beach. They can also be spotted right in the surf, or on secluded beaches basking in the sun.

Oregon Coast Wildlife Viewing Opportunities

The Oregon Coast has lots of wildlife viewing opportunities. A few of our favorites are bird watching, whale watching, and watching the river otters.  Once in a while the transient Orcas even make an appearance.

Thor's Well

Visitors Beware! Thor's Well draws thousands of visitors every year hoping to get a glimpse of one of Oregon coast's amazing natural wonders. The well itself looks like a giant hole in the reef that swallows up seawater after it has rushed in with in coming waves. Although it is amazing to look out visitors should beware of waves and tidal surges coming in over the reef. They can sweep you off your feet and into the rocks quickly. It's best to look up the tides and ocean conditions and stay back if conditions are to rough or unsafe. Tidal surges also known as (sneaker waves) can show up even on a calm day. Watch your kids and don't too close! You definitely would not want to fall into Thor's Well!

Oregon Coast Fat Tire Bike Rentals

We each grabbed a bike and rolled out. A short walk north gets you to a crosswalk where you can cut across Highway 101. From there you can ride down to the beach. After a five-minute ride, you’re on the sand.

Besides the bikes, Safari Town Surf Shop offers rentals and tours of kayaks, surf gear and more. There are several beach routes you can take. We took the Road’s End route, which goes north toward Lincoln City landmarks Cascade Head and God’s Thu

Storm Watching on The Oregon Coast.

The rugged coastline and the raw power of the pacific northwest make the Oregon Coast a prime destination for storm watching in the winter months!
